Distributed Control Systems (DCS)

DCS are system architectures for process control applications. It integrates the programmable logic controller (PLC) and other controllers such as process controllers, sensors, actuators and terminals. It can also be interfaced to a workstation. DCS allows users to manage the process as a complete system, with centralized control while maintaining the capability of distributed or local control of various subsystems. DCS typically consist of the following:

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA)

SCADA refers to systems that perform both monitoring and control of a process or facility, i.e. a computer system monitoring and controlling a process. SCADA generally refers to a system that coordinates, but does not control processes in real time. SCADA typically consist of the following:
  • Human-Machine Interface (HMI)
  • Supervisory (Computer) System
  • Remote Terminal Units (RTUs)
  • Communication infrastructure
Building Management Systems (BMS)

Building Management Systems (BMS) are typically used in buildings or facilities to create a central computer controlled method of controlling, monitoring and optimizing utilities such as heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, lighting, fire systems and security systems. The entire BMS is comprised of a network of interoperable, stand-alone digital controllers communicating on an open protocol communication network to a host computer within the facility and communicating via the intranet to a host computer in a remote location. The BMS is also able to communicate to third party systems such as chillers, boilers, air handling systems, energy metering systems and other energy management systems, access control systems, fire-life safety systems and other building management related devices with open interoperable communication capabilities. Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES)

Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) support the primary production processes in a manufacturing or production plant. MES are IT solutions that 1) collects production input from automatic and human interface data collection devices, 2) makes the data available to other planning software, and 3) directly or through interfaced software substantially conducts: Production line management: Using real-time observations of production activity to make adjustments.
